KAY CRAIN

ABOUT KAY CRAIN:

“My artist's statement should simply read ‘Not edgy.’ I love representational painting and take great pride and pleasure in creating a painting alive with color and light and with subjects that resonate with me. Like most artists, I paint because I have a compelling urge to create something that wasn't there before.  I see art not only as an enjoyable occupation but as a delightful gift as well. The best thing in the world is getting paid for something you’d happily do for free.”

“Although mostly self-taught, I have studied with the late Charles Sovek, Peggi Kroll Roberts and Kim English.  I am a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters Association and American Impressionist Society.  In my spare time, I am a full-time nurse in Labor and Delivery, helping to bring into the world a new bunch of future art aficionados!”

KAY CRAIN’S WORK:

“I’ve loved drawing and painting for as long as I can remember.  The artistic chromosomes go back to my great uncle, Joseph Reidsema, who was an artist in the 30s, 40s and 50s in Michigan and California.  He was a plein air painter of landscapes, seascapes and portraits.  My grandfather, Ray, was also an artists and my mother, Doris, painted as well, so I had access to art supplies and encouragement from her from the time I was quite young.  My sister, Kim, is an artist in O’Fallen, Missouri.”

“My latest work has been to take old photographs from the thirties  through the sixties and bring these people and events  back to life if only for that moment one is viewing the painting.  On that day they were alive and young  and having a great day as they posed for their pictures on the beach in Cape Cod or the farm in Illinois or driving in their convertible in Atlanta.”

“My favorite subject to paint is people…whether portrait commissions or just for fun, I’m always fascinated by the endless combinations of features that make people unique.  I love the work of John Singer Sargent, Nicolai Fechin and Norman Rockwell.  There’s a diverse group if there ever was one!”
