ABOUT LARRY DEGRAFF:
“Painting nature at its most dramatic or subtle, and the occasional rusty pickup truck.”
Larry grew up in a small, midwestern town where the arts were not really appreciated. It was against great odds that he would pursue a career as an illustrator and build a client list that would include Warner Brothers, Walt Disney Company and the pro sports leagues, NBA, NFL and MLB. With this expertise he was offered a position as an artist with Hallmark Cards.
In the midst of tight deadlines and constant revisions, Larry missed the joy of creating that he remembered from childhood and began to paint for himself. He found inspiration in the Impressionists, the Hudson River School and the California Plein Air Painters.
LARRY DEGRAFF’S WORK:
Along with studio painting he committed to painting in the open air which he found both a fast track for creative growth and a good excuse to be outdoors. He especially loved the challenge of finding strong compositions and capturing the sense of light and atmosphere unique to each place.
In recent years Larry has won many regional and national awards for his oil landscapes. In 2011 he made the decision to leave Hallmark in order to pursue painting full time. He has also been fortunate to learn from modern masters Jeff Legg, Matt Smith and others. In warm weather you are likely to find him competing at plein air events from Indiana to Colorado.
