ABOUT LAURA DEN HERTOG:
Hailing from Montreal, Canada where French & English cultures form a unique blend, Laura den Hertog creates a duet of past and present in her work.
The seed of den Hertog’s artistic direction was sown through family trips to the art museums of Holland. Growing up in an eclectic household where family life included creative pursuits and where craftsmanship, ingenuity and skill were supreme, is it any wonder that she gravitated towards time honored painting techniques?
Laura studied commercial arts at Dawson College in Montreal and spent her early years working in illustration and design. She now puts her considerable energy into creating paintings where past meets present, where people and things are timeless and the land is pristine.
LAURA DEN HERTOG’S WORK:
For me being in nature is a transformative, visceral experience. It connects me with something so basic it speaks to my soul, making me feel connected, peaceful and whole. It calms the mind, renewing and regenerating the body. My landscape work is about gratitude, each piece is a tribute to our home.
My still life paintings explore the human touch, often delving into food culture, a theme that recurs in the figure work.
The figurative pieces draw on my experiences and stories shared by family and friends. I have a fascination with hands for their beauty, cleverness and ability to express so much. This poetry of the hands is prominent in much of my work.
